emotions or no emotions?

so last week my counselor said something interesting that i hadn't really thought about, but don't think i agree with. he mentioned that we didn't have emotions before coming to earth because emotions are a physical trait and we didn't have physical bodies. but the more i thought about it, i figured we don't have bodies between our death and resurrection either, yet i've been told we're learning and i believe we can love, which are physical emotions, right? so tell me your thoughts about this, although it's probably one of those answers we won't know while we're here.

  1. Good post... and since you invited thoughts, here you go... without being too philosophical, because philosophy will not lead us to truth... but like you said... isn't the greatest commandment to love the Lord God and then the 2nd to love thy neighbor. why would we spend our whole mortal existence perfecting a trait we couldn't use and develop for the eternities. In addition, there are many religions out there that believe in the Nicean creed that says God is without body parts or passions. We know otherwise, and having passions seems to be "emotion"al to me. One final thing, I think we do a lot of defining, and defining what is emotion and what is a virtue is a difficult line to define. But I believe both were with us from the eternities and will be as well. Here's a link to a good article about our knowledge of God

  2. Thanks, Ty. Very good thoughts. I think you are totally right there. I really need to counsel my counselor...he's LDS too.

  3. I'm not very good with words so I'll just say that I feel there is no question about it, yes we did have emotions before coming to earth. We had to choose to follow Christ's plan or Satan's and aren't choices made by feelings?

  4. We are also going to feel joy and happiness when we get over there, aren't those emotions?
